A Nov. 17 Senate hearing on this legislation means that now is an appropriate time to be agents of change and remind your Senators to support safe chemical policy by co-sponsoring the Safe Chemicals Act of 2011 (S. 847). Although the Senate has many other important items to address, please help us to keep this concern on their agenda. Adding a personal connection to this issue is even more effective.
Scientific studies increasingly link toxic chemicals with a range of negative health impacts, including hormonal and endocrine disruption, pre-term delivery, miscarriage, birth defects, developmental disabilities, pre-disposition to diabetes, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and breast cancer. Although the U.S. population as a whole demonstrates high levels of chemical contamination, women and minority communities are disproportionately affected. Children developing during pregnancy and in their early years after birth are particularly vulnerable. Given the widespread use and minimal testing and oversight of these chemicals, consumers cannot adequate protect themselves without the assistance of federal regulation.
We thank you for showing your appreciation for creation, reverence for human life and dignity at all stages, and respect for the poor and vulnerable.
