Action and “Christ-like Things”

by Grant Clifton
FAN Coordinator of Growth & Outreach

In light of the recent actions many of you took in support of the American Clean Energy and Securities Act (H.R 2454) I would like to describe what unfolded in front of my eyes here in Washington DC. I was amazed to watch all of the Franciscan teachings I have been recently inundated with put into action. I must be honest, I was nervous about trying to organize such a large effort with so many new people that I had never worked with, most of whom are very busy running very active lives and are part of very active Religious communities. (whew!)Friendships were made from people living in the same town and in similar communities but had never had cause to meet, spirits were invigorated, and the task of political involvement and standing for the ecological world that St Francis and Clare call us to do was loudly answered.

I knew from experience that it takes time to build relationships even when you meet in person let alone convince someone you’ve never met before to take action. However, I found this to be completely false when it came to dealing with the Franciscan world. In fact, I was overwhelmed with supportive responses and warm greetings in reply to the first communication sent out about the campaign. Three weeks and 61 visits later, I could barely tell you what happened but I knew that it was a beautiful and very Christ-like thing. From late night phone calls with Patti and her crew in Arizona (because they had little time during the day) to Sr. Eleanor driving to Rep. Pallone’s office in New Jersey (because they would not return our calls), I was consistently moved by the energetic actions so many people with so little time were willing to take. The outpouring of support and consistent values that came from both religious and Franciscan-hearted people from around the country struck a deep chord in my heart. I think it may have struck considerable fear into many a congressional staffer, too!

If nothing else is gained from this campaign but the fact that the whole country witnessed the number, will, consistent ethic, and fortitude of the Franciscan family speaking with one voice, then it was a complete success. Yet much more was accomplished. Friendships were made from people living in the same town and in similar communities but had never had cause to meet, spirits were invigorated, and the task of political involvement and standing for the ecological world that St Francis and Clare call us to do was loudly answered. All of this was performed in a respectful, peaceful and admirable way. I look forward to our future endeavors and pray that the Lord bless each and every one of you.

Peace and all Good.
