The legislative process to address climate change definitely is moving quickly. The Franciscan Campaign on Climate Change is moving just as quickly to bring a Franciscan-grounded message into the conversation. Below are a number of brief campaign updates and next steps:
Legislation—
The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 has been or soon will be voted out of committee.
FAN’s Action—
FAN advocates in Congressional Districts of Energy and Commerce Committee Members received an Action Alert urging them to write their members to request the legislation be crafted in a way that best cares for the earth and its people, especially the poor. Here is a copy of the sample email text (PDF).
District Visits—
The first phase of the FCCC involves working with FAN members to organize Congressional visits during the Memorial Day Recess (May 25-29), when House Members are in their home districts. At present, more than 40 district meetings have been set up during this time period. Several more are in the works.

Additional Background Information
Climate change legislation and international climate treaty negotiations will be a significant effort over the next few years. The struggle to change the direction of green house gas emissions will be an endeavor of public and private action for decades to come. These struggles will impact all parts of our lives. As Franciscans, we have insights and wisdom to add to the undertaking.
The FCCC will be in multiple phases corresponding to the various steps of how new Federal and International Laws will be created. In the first part of this campaign the FCCC will focus on legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives. In particular, the first phase goal of FAN is to facilitate Franciscans and Franciscan-hearted people meeting with their Representatives during the Memorial Day Recess (May 25-29, 2009). During the Memorial Day Recess, Members of Congress are home in their district. The most effective way to carry a message to Congress is to speak directly to your Representative. Here is an opportunity.
Other ways you can participate in the Franciscan Campaign on Climate Change
1. Invite others to participate in this campaign. Think of 5 people to whom you can send an e-mail invitation for the campaign. Please use the "tell-a-friend" section of our website and craft a personal message for your friends/colleagues.
2. Pray: Incorporate the Canticle of the Creatures into your regular prayer time. In your mediation, consider how each of our Brothers or Sisters (Sun, Water…) will be affected by climate change.
