Help WantedFAN Principles for Job Growth

Fr. Dave Couturier, OFM Cap. in his white paper “I Still Desire to Work” (PDF) has elaborated on the condition of labor in the current recession from a Franciscan perspective.  In early 2010, there are signs that certain sectors of the economy are experiencing economic stabilization yet double digit unemployment remains constant.   FAN supports policies that stimulate job growth and development and support for the jobless victims of the current recession.  A recent study called “Battered by the Storm” (PDF), by the Institute for Policy Study, the Center For Community Change, Jobs with Justice, and Legal Momentum illustrates that the social safety net has eroded over the past 30 years and that job creation and safety net spending can respond to the situation.

FAN advocates the following principles in developing public policy relative to jobs and unemployment:

  • The dignity of work and worker is to be respected
  • Employing people at a living wage with corresponding benefits
  • Efforts in creation of jobs, especially in green technology
  • Maintaining our infrastructure and transportation systems
  • Maintaining unemployment compensation and health insurance for the unemployed
