Merry Christmas and Peace and Justice to you and yours in 2020!
As you probably know, 2019 was a year of changes for the Franciscan Action Network, as our Executive Director Patrick Carolan is moving on after nine years—we wish him all the best in his next adventure!
We just introduced Dr. Steve Schneck, PhD as our new executive director. Steve is excited to start in January—you’ll be hearing more from him in the new year.
What hasn’t changed is our commitment to advocacy in the spirits of Saints Francis and Clare. 2019 saw several accomplishments including:
- Continuing to build our national grassroots capacity through our Franciscan Solidarity Tables which brings together all parts of the Franciscan family to advocate together in their community. In 2019 we brought on Nora Pfeiffer to lead the tables.
- We continue to work with both Catholic and interfaith partners in Washington, D.C. and across the country advocating in support of our immigrant and refugee brothers and sisters. While so much has happened with immigration and refugees this year, the highlight was organizing the Catholic Days of Action in Washington, D.C., Newark, NJ, and El Paso, TX.
- As part of our ongoing commitment to creation care, continued our interfaith work with Living the Change calling on individuals to make a personal commitment to reduce their carbon footprint. But we also know that change must come at the systemic level. This month, we risked arrest with Fire Drill Friday’s Jane Fonda and environmental activists to push for businesses and governments to make the necessary changes to reduce their carbon footprint.
- With the passage of HR1 in the House in March, the Faithful Democracy coalition began to revitalize as we pushed to see the bill introduced in the Senate which would get big money out of politics and fully restore the Voting Rights Act. The highlight was a meeting on Capitol Hill with faith leaders and Senator Udall—who has tirelessly advocated for the bill in the Senate.
We wouldn’t have been able to do what we did here in D.C. in 2019 without your support: from calling your members of Congress with the St. Clare Pledge to the daily prayers that help sustain us at a time when our nation feels more divided than ever.
Can you help us one more time in 2019? Make a year-end donation to FAN today to ensure that we are able to continue our work advocating for immigrants and refugees, the environment, a fully functioning government, and organizing the entire Franciscan family all across the country.
